Welcome to California, where possession up to 1 oz (28.5 grams) of marijuana is an infraction!

HEALTH AND SAFETY CODE

SECTION 11357 (b)

While larger amounts can lead to more serious charges, California law classifies possession of up to 28.5 grams of cannabis as an infraction. This can carry with it a fine of up to $100. It is important to note ,however, in federal jurisdiction it is treated like any other controlled substance and can carry prison sentences (Controlled Substances Act (CSA) (21 U.S.C. § 811).
